Local contributions in the presidential race

Donations to the presidential race can be made in several ways. Here are the contributions in 13 southern New York counties to four different committees for the Republican and Democratic nominees in 2012: the presidential campaign fund; the national party committee; a joint fundraising committee between those two committees; and the main super PAC backing each candidate.

For Barack Obama, those are: Obama for America, Democratic National Committee, Obama Victory Fund, and Priorities USA.

For Mitt Romney, they are: Romney for President, Republican National Committee, Romney Victory, and Restore Our Future.

The joint fundraising committee is a joint effort by the presidential fund and the national party to hold events to raise money. A donor can give a maximum amount of $70,800. Of that amount, $5,000 goes to the presidential campaign fund and most of the rest goes to the national party, though some might go to state party committees. The joint fundraising committee also keeps some to pay its fundraising bills.

This database is based on a master file on contributions kept by the Federal Elections Commission. It includes some, but not all, of the contributions of less than $200 because those need not be recorded individually.
