Federal employees in the New York area

The deadline is approaching for automatic government spending cuts, raising the potential for furloughs or layoffs. Here is information on 46,171 employees who work on Long Island, in New York City and in the Westchester/Hudson Valley region. The bulk of the details below, obtained through a federal Freedom of Information Act request, comes from the Office of Personnel Management in Washington. A significant portion of the names or locations have been withheld in accordance with government policy. To see a list of agencies excluded, and to read the policy on exclusions, click here.

Information on another 4,484 positions in this database comes from the Defense Department. All those names and duty stations have been withheld because of the department's privacy policy and a presidential declaration made after the Sept. 11 attacks.
