DeRiggi-Whitton can propose and vote on laws that affect the Nassau County Police Department. As a body, the Nassau County Legislature oversees the police department and can confirm or reject the county executive's choice for police commissioner. The legislature can also hold hearings and subpoena documents and witnesses.
DeRiggi-Whitton, of Glen Cove, was elected to a second term in November. The Glen Cove resident was elected to two terms as a city council member from 2008 to 2011. Her father, Donald DeRiggi, is a former Glen Cove mayor.
