Kopel can propose and vote on laws that affect the Nassau County Police Department. As a body, the Nassau County Legislature oversees the police department and can confirm or reject the county executive's choice for police commissioner. The legislature can also hold hearings and subpoena documents and witnesses.
Kopel, of Lawrence, was elected to a third term in November. Admitted to practice law, he currently runs a national title insurance and settlement services business based in Valley Stream where he has previously served as a trustee of the local Chamber of Commerce.
