Bellone is the chief executive of Suffolk County. He appoints the Suffolk County Police Department commissioner.
Bellone was elected county executive in 2011. He served as an aide to Babylon Town Supervisor Richard Schaffer from 1995 to 1997. Bellone was elected to the Babylon town board in 1997 and as Babylon town supervisor in 2001. As executive, he has reached contract agreements with police unions that include no-layoff clauses and promise future raises.
