McCarthy, of Mineola, was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996. She serves on the House Committee on Financial Services and the Committee on Education and the Workforce. McCarthy announced in early 2014 that she would not seek re-election to her post.

Do you support legalizing the use of medical marijuana in New York?

Yes

Should chronically ill children and teens be able to use medical marijuana with parental and doctor approval?

Yes

Ways to consume marijuana include smoking it, using it as an oil, taking it as a capsule and eating it.

Should medical marijuana be available in a variety of forms to allow patients to choose the form they use?

No

Should medical marijuana be limited for chronically ill patients and distributed by a limited number of hospitals as proposed by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo?

Do you support legalizing the recreational use of marijuana as has been done in Colorado and Washington?

No

Her comments:

While I am in favor of enabling patients suffering from various ailments to use medicinal marijuana to ease pain and lessen symptoms, essential steps must first be taken to establish comprehensive oversight, supervision and regulation by doctors and medical experts.

I would like to emphasize that we look into how the term, “chronically ill” is used in any proposed legislation. There are some conditions that technically are not categorized as “chronic,” for which regulated medicinal marijuana usage has immensely benefited patients based on significant medical research.
