Background:

Schumer, who was first elected to the U.S. senate in 1998, is currently serving his third six-year term. He is the chairman of the Committee on Rules and Administration, and also serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Senate Finance Committee and the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. Schumer represented Brooklyn and Queens in the U.S. House of Representatives for 18 years. He also served in the state assembly and graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School.
